1. Why did the Maharaja ban tiger hunting in the state?

When the Maharaja came to know after killing his first tiger that he had threat to his life from the hundredth tiger, he resolved to kill a hundred tigers. To accomplish his mission, he banned tiger hunting in the state. A proclamation was issued to the effect that if anyone dared to fling so much as a stone at a tiger, all his wealth and property would be confiscated.

2. How did the Dewan manage to get the 100th tiger for the Maharaja?

The Maharaja was so determined to kill the hundredth tiger that in his anger, he ordered the Dewan to find the tiger otherwise be prepared to face his wrath. To save his life, the Dewan bought an old tiger from a circus in Madras and hid it in his house. At night, he took the tiger in the car to the forest and left it there ready to be killed by the Maharaja.


3. How did the Tiger King become the victim of the hundredth tiger?

The hundredth tiger, which caused Tiger King’s death, was a toy tiger. On his son’s third birthday, the Maharaja bought a wooden toy tiger for his son as a gift. One day as he was playing with this toy with his son, one of its slivers, pierced his right hand. He pulled it out and continued playing. Next day, the infection flared in the Maharaja’s right hand and in four days it spread all over his arm. The Maharaja was operated upon but died during surgery.

A British officer, while visiting Pratibandapuram, wanted to go for tiger hunt. But the Tiger King did not permit him. So in order to save his king from the wrath of the British officer, the Maharaja bribed the British officer. He sent a gift of expensive diamond rings to his wife expecting that she would choose one or two rings. She kept all the rings and sent a note of thanks to the Maharaja. So the Maharaja spent three lakh rupees to save his kingdom.

5. How did the Tiger King kill the hundredth tiger?

The hundredth tiger was an old tiger brought by the Dewan from the People’s Park Circus, Madras. When it came in front of the Maharaja, he stood in a humble supplication. The Maharaja had taken a careful aim and shot at him. The tiger crumbled down. The Maharaja got elated with joy and left the place. Later on it was found that the bullet missed the tiger and it had fainted.

He had to bribe the officer by sending diamond rings worth 3 lakh for his wife to save his throne.

7. How did the Tiger King celebrate his victory over the killing of 100th tiger?


The Tiger King was overwhelmed with elation when he killed the hundredth tiger. He was feeling satisfied to have fulfilled his vow. He ordered to bring the dead tiger in a grand procession. It was buried and a tomb was erected at the burial place.

8. What help did Dr. Sadao seek from Hana while operating on the wounded man?

Dr. Sadao needed assistance of Hana while operating. The wound was so deep that the man was to be given anaesthesia. Dr. Sadao asked Hana to help him by giving anaesthesia to the man during the operation. Though Hana had never done this before, she managed to help Dr. Sadao in his operation.

When Dr. Sadao and Hana saw the wounded American soldier, at first they thought of throwing him back into the sea. But they could not do so. Finally, Hana resolved the problem by saying that they should carry him into the house. She suggested that the man should be treated and then given to the police.

The General was very worried about his own health as he was suffering a lot. He desperately wanted Dr. Sadao beside him and trusted only him for his medical treatment. If Dr. Sadao was arrested, then there was no one else who could have operated upon him and saved his life. So he didn’t order for the immediate arrest of Dr. Sadao.

11. Give two reasons why Dr. Sadao was not sent abroad with the Japanse soldiers.


The General was very ill and he was being treated by Dr. Sadao. He needed an operation and for that he trusted only Dr. Sadao. Moreover, Dr. Sadao was doing a research to render ‘the wounds entirely clean’; that is why he was not sent abroad with the Japanese soldiers.

12. How did the General offer to help Dr. Sadao in getting rid of the American?

The General offered to send his private assassins to help Dr. Sadao in getting rid of the American. These assassins would kill the white man noiselessly and also dispose of his body.

13. What was the dilemma faced by Dr. Sadao and Hana after encountering the injured American soldier?


When Hana and Dr. Sadao saw the American soldier, they were in a dilemma. They were very loyal to their country and didn’t want to save the enemy. They wanted to hand him over to the police. But the man was wounded and in a pitiable state. Thus, the doctor inside Dr. Sadao urged him to save his life. Humanity rose above patriotism and they thought of first treating him and then handing him over to the police.

14. How did the wizard help Roger Skunk?


Roger Skunk smelt very bad and that is why nobody wanted to play with him. The owl suggested to him to go to the wizard for help. The wizard asked Roger Skunk for the smell he wanted to have and so gave him the smell of roses with the help of his magic wand.

15. Why does Jo insist that her father should tell her the story with a different ending?

Jo was a small girl of four years. For her peer acceptance and appreciation was the most important thing. She found it cruel and insensitive on the part of mommy to hit the wizard and get back Skunk his original smell. She wanted a happy ending and also wizard to hit mommy for her insensitive act. So she asked her father to tell the story with a different ending.

16. Why did Roger Skunk’s mommy insist on taking him to the wizard at once?


Roger Skunk’s mother was annoyed to find him smelling like roses. She believed that a skunk should smell like a skunk. It is their natural feature and the mark of their identity. So, she wanted his original smell to be restored as soon as possible and that is why she immediately took him to the wizard.

17. Why was Roger Skunk’s mother angry? On whom did she pour her anger?


Roger Skunk’s mother was angry to find Roger Skunk smelling like a rose and losing his original smell. In a rage, she went to the wizard and hit him on his head for changing Roger Skunk’s smell. She asked him to give his original smell back to him.

18. What did Jo want the wizard to do when Mommy Skunk approached him?


Jo was a small girl of four. She had more importance for peer appreciation and acceptance. She was too young to understand the moral values to remain original and maintain one’s own identity. That was why Jo didn’t like her act of hitting the wizard on the head. She wanted that mother should be punished for her cruel act of having hit the wizard on the head.

19. Why does Jack insist that it was the wizard that was hit and not the mother?


Jack insisted that it was the wizard and not the mother who was hit because he wanted to imbibe a moral value in his daughter. He wanted to stress the point that parents are always right so they demand respect and authority.

Roger Skunk smelled awful. He smelled so bad that none of the other animals would play with him. He solved the problem by seeking the old wise owl’s advice who in turn sent him to the wizard.

Derry says Beauty loved the Beast and so she kissed him and he changed into a handsome prince. But this would not happen to him because no one was going to kiss him. Even his mother kissed him on the other side of the face.

The half of Derry’s face was burnt and disfigured due to spilling of acid. People either ignored him or had pitied him. Some even made fun of him and called him ugly and the devil. They were scared of him.

Derry’s mother did not have a good opinion about Mr. Lamb as she had heard many things about him. She didn’t want Derry to go and meet him. She believed Mr. Lamb to be a dangerous person who lived alone in a big home.

Mr. Lamb appeared to be a peculiar person to Derry because he was not able to understand many of the things which Mr. Lamb said. Mr. Lamb told Derry to keep his ears shut and ignore what the people said. His positive approach to life, in spite of his handicap, was a peculiar thing for Derry.

26. What kind of a person was Evans? Why did he want to sit for O-level German examination? 

Evans was a congenital kleptomaniac. He was in prison and was famous for being ‘Evans the Break’. He was a genius in planning. He was very observant too. He wanted to sit for the O-level German Examination as part of his plan to escape from the prison.

27. How was Jackson instrumental in Evans’ escape from the prison?



Jackson was instrumental in Evans’ escape from the prison because he allowed Evans to wear his old cap. Evans told him that it was his lucky hat and due to his compassionate nature, Jackson allowed him to wear the cap which concealed the haircut of Evans. He had cut his hair in the same style as the parson McLeery had.

28. Who is Carter? Why was he summoned?


Carter is the Detective Superintendent. The Governor called him after he came to know of Evans’ escape. He told him to take the injured parson with him as only he seemed to know what was happening and could help him to catch Evans.

29. What was the purpose of the correction slip?


The correction slip served two purposes in the escape plan of Evans. First, it confirmed the name of the hotel Golden Lion where Evans had to reach after his escape. Secondly, it also confirmed the time at which Evans’ paper had started.

The Governor finally realised that is was McLeery who had escaped and it was Evans who had stayed back in the guise of McLeery. It was foolish to send him out with Detective Carter. McLeery was wearing two collars, two gowns and two spectacles along with his own clothes. It was so cleverly done that nobody could detect it. So, one collar, one gown, one false beard and a pair of spectacles were used by Evans to disguise as parson for his escape.

Both Zitkala-Sa and Bama belonged to the oppressed community. As a result, they were treated in an inhumane and undignified manner. They both experienced humiliation in their childhood which left a deep impression on their minds.

Zitkala-Sa faced a lot of humiliation on her first day at the Carlisle India School in the land of apples. Her long hair was forcibly cut. This was undignified for her because as per her culture and traditions only cowards or mourners had their hair shingled. Despite her resistance, the author was tied to chair and her hair was cut. This brought tears to her eyes and broke her spirit.

35. How did Zitkala-Sa try to avoid the loss of her long hair?


In order to avoid the cutting of her hair, Zitkala-Sa, crept up the stairs and hid herself under a bed in a corner place in an open room. But she was found out and dragged out. She tried to resist by kicking and scratching wildly. She was carried downstairs and tied to a chair. Her long thick hair was shingled.

36. Who was Annan? How did he justify the behaviour of the elder?


Annan was Bama’s elder brother. He explained to Bama that it was obvious that the elderly man would carry the things in that manner because the people of their community were considered untouchables. They were not supposed to touch the things meant for the upper castes.

37. What were Zitkala-Sa’s objections to the cutting of hair?

Zitkala-Sa objected to the cutting of the hair because in her community cutting of hair was considered inauspicious and undignified. Only unskilled warriors, mourners or cowards had their hair shingled. So it was the greatest humiliation for anyone.

38. Why was Zitkala-Sa’s behaviour in dining room peculiar to others?


The children of the Carlisle Indian School were trained to act mechanically. At the time of breakfast, they all lined up, and moved to the dining room when a bell was sounded. There were three bells at regular intervals to guide the students for eating. The first bell was to draw the chair, second was to make everyone sit and the third was to start eating. Bama didn’t know anything about it so she pulled the chair after the first bell and sat on it immediately. So her behaviour was peculiar to others.

39. What details of the inhuman behaviour of the upper castes were given to Bama by her brother?


Annan, Bama’s elder brother, told her that they belonged to a lower class and were considered as untouchables. They were denied dignity, respect or honour in the society. They were exploited and degraded and were forced to do manual work.
